Stone is an ancient rock which expresses its value by being Unique, Original and Unrepeatable. Because it is a natural material it can contain imperfections which limit its use. Pietra Nuova corrects these imperfections, enhancing the concept of Uniqueness and basing its work on this fundamental foundation. With the deepest respect for nature and creation, imperfections are repaired with tailored precision to restore the stone to its finest appearance. Just as the skilful hand of the sculptor reproduces beauty so Pietra Nuova repairs stone in order to Preserve the irreplaceable.
The company has a yard with an overhead crane for moving materials and a spacious covered fabrication facility in which all work processes take place. The fabrication facility measures circa 400 sq mts and is structured so that all work processes can be organized in a rational and functional way. At the front is an area dedicated to the repair and reconstruction of materials and to the storage of finished slabs. This means that clients can oversee the work and, if need be, get their own customers to see the finished product. The inside area is dedicated to resin coating and finishing the stone that has already been worked on and repaired. Drying and oven curing lines make it possible to apply resin coating to a greater number of slabs in preparation for final finishing.
Growing difficulties in finding stone free of imperfections have always made it increasingly necessary to carry out repair work on stone slabs that would once have been rejected. Slabs cut from one block can sometimes reveal imperfections on the inside, even quite extensive ones, so much so that as a result the stone cannot be used or only partially. This problem can become all the more onerous when dealing with fine, valuable, hard to find marble. Some fabrication facilities carry out repair work using computerized machinery which, when dealing with particularly conspicuous imperfections (fissures, cavities etc), take photographs of the area to be repaired and then the machine does the work.
Of course these kind of standard repairs do not always guarantee excellent, aesthetic results, especially on stone that is uneven or irregular and in which wedges used to fill cavities do not always match the pattern of the natural vein. PIETRA NUOVA have laid down the method with which to carry out this process, based on the concept of preserving works that can no longer be produced, and with the utmost respect for the environment, taking into account the resources used during extraction. Repair work therefore becomes a true reconstruction procedure, with exclusively manual workmanship to reproduce and replace the imperfections and match the pattern of the original vein. With this kind of procedure it is possible to achieve a high level aesthetic and visually pleasing results, especially on particularly challenging stone, such as Portoro marble, and some kinds of Onyx that have extremely varied and veined patterns.
This reconstruction method also makes it possible to carry out extremely complex and difficult work on stone that has serious and extensive problems (large splits, deeply penetrating fissures, slabs in parts, etc) that could otherwise not be repaired using any other method. The intrinsic value of stone repaired and reconstructed in this way finds its maximum expression when monolithic slabs are used in contemporary architecture, where design combines the uniqueness of the stone with exclusive, original decorative applications and solutions.
The resin coating process is used extensively, most of all to salvage fragile and flawed stone. In fact, besides improving the aesthetic appearance of the stone, it also improves its resistance. PIETRA NUOVA have customized the process by integrating it and making it part of the completion stages in the manual reconstruction of faulty stone, where finishing requires highly experienced precision work particularly in monolithic use (slabs in full view, open vein configurations, back-lit applications etc).
Resin coating is therefore carried out alongside reconstruction work on the stone slab, and the resin mix and color is created in accordance. Before applying the resin the slabs are dried in ovens for better dehydration, which is essential to obtain perfect final results. Resin is applied manually and in localized spots to remove even the smallest imperfections caused by the natural porosity of the stone, respecting and highlighting the pattern of the natural stone and enhancing its brightness.
During resin penetration and hardening, the slabs are constantly monitored to guarantee they are perfect for the final finishing stages.
To complete the repair and reconstruction of faulty stone, PIETRA NUOVA brings the stages of the process to a close with slab surface polishing. After resin coating and hardening, modern automatic machines are used to polish the repaired slabs and obtain a perfectly flat and shiny surface. After polishing, a full appraisal and appreciation of completed reconstruction work can be made. In some cases and with certain types of finished work, polishing is carried out manually.
